Overall, this laptop is by FAR the cheapest laptop for the price (which was $989.00 US dollars at the time, however I have seen them drop to $969.00 already within a month of buying mine!!), in my opinion, of course.
NEW! - Toshiba SPEC SHEET This is for the 1620 and 1605 models. Straight from Toshiba. Useful for finding specifics (name brands) of your hardware. If someone can help me figure how to make this prettier, email me :)
Things I bought in addition to base 1605 model:
For 150 US dollars (cheapest on the net, seriously), I bought an extra 128 megs of ram from Coast to Coast Memory to max it out at 160 megs.
For 25 US dollars (cheapest on the net, seriously), I bought a 10mpbs PCMCIA ethernet card from Centrix (D-Link DE-650CT)
I'm considering buying this 20 gig hard drive for US227.00 dollars.
Thanks to C. Jeff Butler for informing me that the Toshiba 1605cds *will* take a 256 meg simm! (whereas toshiba claims it will only hold a 128 meg simm) He says that the only thing that won't work is the'Suspend to Disk' feature, so it's your call. Personally, having 288 megs of ram sounds quite tempting :)
Woo hoo! As of 6/5/2000 I have gotten a bunch of people responding to me via email on various tips and questions! Amazing seeing how I just submitted this webpage a little over 2 weeks ago.
As of 10/20/2000 I have gotten an enourmous response from people trying to install Linux on this laptop. One of the owners, Mike, had mentioned going in half on me on buying the sound driver. Would anyone else be interested? If we got enough people, it would significantly lower the cost! :) Enjoy the new layout of the website. ~kyle
Update: I recommend *everyone* to follow this link first. Then, if you have windows on a partition (which it would probably be worthwhile to install for a short period of time, just to upgrade your BIOS) you should get this file and install it.
